Second-hand road bike components
A road bike's performance does not depend only on the type of frame. All of the bike's components – groupset, wheels, braking system, wheels – influence the rider's responsiveness and comfort. Whether you are a fan of the second-hand electric road bike, the second-hand fixie or the second-hand track bike, choosing good components will make all the difference.
Which groupset for a second-hand road bike?
The groupset fitted to a road bike affects the quality of the gear shifting as well as how quickly it happens. It can be mechanical, with a cable between the shifters and the derailleur, like the Shimano Ultegra or SRAM Red groupsets, which are two high-performance mechanical and electronic groupsets. But there are also electronic groupsets, wired or wireless, which allow optimal shifting on the road. Right now, the various Di2 groupsets from Shimano and eTap from SRAM are the top-of-the-range groupsets on the market. When talking about transmission, don't forget the chainrings, cassettes, and front and rear derailleurs. Cranksets are also very important.

Which wheels for a second-hand road bike?
Aluminium wheels are the most comfortable and affordable, as they are generally heavier. Carbon wheels are lighter and more dynamic, which makes them higher performing. Rim depth also affects the bike's aerodynamics. Deeper rims are more aerodynamic, but can be a drawback in crosswinds as they increase wind exposure.

Choosing your second-hand road bike according to how you use it
For occasional and beginner use of a second-hand road bike
To start road cycling, you will need a comfortable bike that combines lightness and strength so you can enjoy relaxed rides. In this case, a road bike with an aluminium frame is recommended. You can opt for a groupset with mechanical shifting, such as Shimano's Sora or Tiagra groupsets. A rim braking system and aluminium wheels will do the job for occasional riding. You will find bikes equipped in this configuration between €350 and €850
For regular road cycling on a second-hand road bike
You can opt for an aluminium or carbon road bike depending on your appetite for performance and your budget. You will need a lively, stiff bike that gives you optimal efficiency on the road. So that your gear changes go smoothly, you can opt for a fairly high-end mechanical groupset. From Shimano, there are the 105 and Ultegra groupsets, as well as the Red groupset from SRAM. Carbon wheels with an aluminium braking track are recommended for regular use of your road bike. With this configuration, you will find bikes between €900 and €1,700.
For racing on a road bike
A carbon road bike is recommended for racing. Functional mechanics and quality equipment will let you concentrate on your race and give it 100%. Every detail matters and you will gain places on the finish line. Carbon wheels will give you the best possible performance thanks to their low weight and stiffness. You can opt for an electronic groupset (Shimano Di2 or SRAM eTap). You will find bikes of this type between €2,000 and €5,000
