Cross-Country MTB is the best-known MTB discipline. Discover all our tips for buying a new or second-hand XC MTB on Troc-Vélo.
What is Cross-Country MTB?
The Cross-Country MTB or XC MTB is dedicated to speed and competition. It is mostly ridden on technical terrain that demands a certain physical effort. In cross-country or XC MTB, you generally ride a circuit that combines a technical section, descents and climbs. Efficiency is the watchword of XC MTB. Endurance and power are the keys to success in cross-country MTB. It is a race: you against the others. The aim is to move as fast as possible and manage your race as well as you can to be the first across the finish line. There are three main cross-country events: Olympic Cross-Country, Marathon Cross-Country and Eliminator Cross-Country. each of these disciplines calls for a suitable XC MTB.
How to choose my Cross-Country MTB?
Choosing a Cross-Country MTB will depend on each person's riding: family rides, occasional riding or competition. These criteria, together with the budget you want to devote to it, will determine whether you buy a more or less high-end MTB.
In general, in cross-country, you will need a fast bike that combines strength, lightness and stiffness.
A hardtail carbon XC MTB frame is ideal for performance, with front suspension, limited travel of 100 to 120 mm and disc brakes that give progressive and effective braking in all weather.
More and more 29-inch MTBs are seen in Cross-Country riding: this wheel size offers better efficiency with great traction power. As for the drivetrain, a single chainring is also increasingly used, which helps reduce the weight of the bike.
Which XC MTB should you choose for Olympic Cross-Country?
Olympic XC is a cross-country MTB event on a short circuit (between 5 and 9 km) where all the riders start at the same time and the first to arrive wins. It is a sustained pace all the way: over such a short distance, you do not have a minute to lose, and the quality of your MTB will greatly affect your performance!
For this, you need a highly dynamic and very responsive MTB: If possible, we recommend a carbon XC MTB. Rear suspension is not compulsory if the terrain is not very rough. 29-inch wheels are strongly recommended to gain efficiency.
Which XC MTB should you choose for Marathon Cross-Country?
XC Marathon is a longer format (between 60 and 120 km) and includes rolling sections and technical sections. The aim is to last the distance: if you make mistakes, the circuit is long enough to let competitors catch you up. You will need to manage your effort over time to keep a lead position.
For this discipline, you need a full-suspension Cross-Country MTB for more comfort, as it is a long-duration event. In addition, fairly wide tyres are recommended so you can ride over any type of terrain. 27.5’’+ wheels can offer a good alternative to 29’’.
Which XC MTB should you choose for Eliminator Cross-Country?
XC Eliminator is the sprint version of XC MTB, on a circuit with distances between 500 m and 1 km that includes obstacles. Here, efficiency is king. The distance is too short to tolerate the slightest mistake and you do not have a second to lose.
For this discipline, a hardtail MTB is recommended, as it is much more dynamic. The lightness of the MTB is also a major criterion in this discipline: a carbon frame can make the difference. *29’’ wheels will be ideal given the intensity of this event.
